Our Organic Premium Gelatinized Black Maca Powder is made from 100% black maca roots grown in the high Andes of Peru. It combines two preparation methods: Premium fresh processing and gelatinization. The roots are dried soon after harvest rather than slowly sun-dried, then gelatinized to remove much of their naturally occurring starch.
This pure black maca root powder is certified organic, Fair Trade, non-GMO and vegan. It contains no fillers, sweeteners or unnecessary additives, and despite the name “gelatinized,” no gelatin or animal ingredients are used.
Premium Gelatinized Black Maca Powder is a specialized form of maca powder made exclusively from black maca roots. The roots are grown by an organic farming cooperative in and around Junín, Peru, one of the traditional maca-growing regions of the Andes.
Unlike traditionally prepared maca, which is generally dried slowly in the mountain sun, Premium maca roots are taken for processing shortly after harvest and dried under controlled conditions. The dried roots are then gelatinized before being milled into a fine powder.
For our maca products, Premium refers primarily to the way the roots are handled after harvest. Freshly harvested black maca roots are processed and dried soon after harvest rather than undergoing the longer traditional sun-drying process.
This preparation produces a black maca powder with a different flavor, color and composition from traditionally sun-dried maca. Premium maca also tends to have a stronger, more pronounced flavor and is produced in smaller seasonal quantities because processing takes place around the annual harvest.
Gelatinization is a traditional preparation process in which maca is heated and pressurized to break down and remove much of its natural starch. This produces a gelatinized maca powder that many people find easier to digest than raw maca.
The word “gelatinized” can be confusing, but no gelatin is added. Our gelatinized black maca remains entirely plant-based and vegan.
Gelatinized maca also tends to be somewhat darker than raw maca powder because of the heating step used during processing.
Premium Gelatinized Black Maca combines the fresh-processed Premium preparation method with the lower-starch characteristics of gelatinized maca. It is a practical choice for customers who specifically want black maca root powder but prefer gelatinized rather than raw maca.
The flavor is earthy and malty, with a stronger and more pronounced character than traditionally sun-dried maca. It works especially well in smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, plant milk, juice and other recipes where its distinctive flavor can be combined with other ingredients.

I find that Black Maca gives me more energy and stamina. I’m 57 years old, and can make guys half my age “fall out” trying to out lift or out pace me in the cross-fit class I take… If I ever skip a day taking Black Maca, I feel it… the “reserves” are not in my tank. The only reason I gave the Gelatinized Black Maca 4 stars vs 5. is I prefer the “earthy taste” of the raw black maca. Both varieties work well.
