Premium gelatinized black maca is made from 100% black maca roots, the rarest of all maca root colors.   This type of maca is pre-cooked to help activate some nutrients and remove starch content.  The result is a nutrition packed maca that is easy to digest.   

How Is Premium Gelatinized Black Maca Different?

What makes this maca unique is how it is originally processed after harvest.   At about 9 months after planting, maca roots are ready to be harvested.   When they are harvested the roots need to be immediately dried.  Traditionally, the roots are dried in the sun over the course of several weeks.  However, some roots are now taken to a processing plant where they are dried more quickly in large low temperature dehydrators.  This rapid processing leaves more glucosinolates and other nutrients in the final product.  That is why it is called “premium.”  

Once the roots are dried, they are ready for gelatinization.   Gelatinization is a process in which maca roots are heated to high temperatures (160F / 70C). The heat causes the starch molecules in maca to irreversibly dissolve and the result is a product that has had some of its nutrients compromised, but is easier to digest than raw maca. It’s important to note that nothing is added to maca during the gelatinization process.  All gelatinized maca is 100% vegan.  
After the roots are gelatinized they are ready to be ground into a powder, tested for nutrient content and safety and then packaged and shipped out. 

What’s The Difference Between Premium and Standard Maca Products?

Compared to standard (sundried) maca products premium maca:

• Has standardized levels of glucosinolate content – these are nutrients that have been associated with helping protect against cancers.
• Typically has higher levels of macaenes and macamides which are 2 nutrients unique to maca that are thought to support hormone health

Enjoying maca in powder form is the least expensive and most versatile way to add maca to your diet. Our premium gelatinized black maca powder is very finely ground and mixes well into smoothies, drinks and other recipes.  It has a rich taste and a darker color than premium raw maca.  Note that the taste may be a bit stronger or spicier than standard maca powders.

Our maca capsules are made from vegetable cellulose and therefore 100% vegan.  We fill our capusles in house and because of that we can be sure that they contain only 100% pure maca powder.   We never use fillers, flow-agents or additives of any kind.  Maca capsules are more expensive but they offer convenience and precision in serving size compared to maca powders.

The advantages of using gelatinized maca are:

• Easier digestion when eating various foods because the starch is removed
• More concentrated nutrients - the absence of starch means that gram for gram, gelatinized maca is more concentrated than raw maca

The disadvantage of using Gelatinized Maca is:

While raw maca can cause temporary symptoms like bloating, gas, or upset stomach (in about 5%-10% of people), high-quality gelatinized maca simply will not do so.
