You might be asking yourself why you can’t just buy whole maca root, so you can be sure you’re getting nothing but pure, unadulterated maca. It’s an understandable concern. Unfortunately, due to disingenuous smuggling tactics, it is currently illegal to transport whole maca root, fruit, or seeds from Peru to anywhere else in the world. It’s also due to this smuggling that it’s important to be sure to know the provenance of your maca – that is, where it comes from and whose hands it’s passed through on its way to you. Before you purchase your maca powder from us, there’s one thing we’d like you to know right from the start: that we sell only the best organic, fair-trade 100% maca products. We know where our maca comes from because it’s sustainably grown in our fields in the Junin Plateau area of the Peruvian Andes. All of our maca is certified organic by Control Union Certifications, whose stringent standards mean they assess everything from growth to harvesting to production to be sure that label is earned.
Which maca root is the best maca for you? We offer red, black, and yellow maca root powders, in addition to our tricolor or “heritage blend” maca powder. Each color maca root has its own purported health benefits, and which you choose will depend on what you’re hoping to get out of your new maca regimen. Our standard raw maca root powders are sun dried before being ground and packaged for sale. An important factor to consider before purchasing is what your ideal serving size might be. How much maca should you take? Maca powder is a food, and the “right” amount for you is going to depend on a number of factors like your body weight, your overall health and age, etc.
Typically we recommend starting with 1-3 teaspoons of raw maca powder in the morning with your breakfast, whether you’re mixing it into a glass of water or a bowl of oatmeal.
We also offer a premium maca powder formulation. It’s still 100% organic maca root, but instead of being sundried it’s immediately dried in a low-temperature dehydrator immediately after being harvested. This results in a product with more glucosinolates, nutrients known for their anti-inflammatory effects that research indicates can also help fight cancer. Another key difference is that this maca is lighter in color and has a spicier flavor than our standard maca, and depending on the sensitivity of your digestive system it might be a little more difficult to stomach. For that reason we suggest only 1-2 teaspoons of premium maca powder until you can be sure of what your body can handle.
What makes gelatinized maca powder unique? Our gelatinized maca has been pre-cooked to break down the starch content, which makes it easier to digest. For this reason, we recommend it for those who might have had difficulty stomaching maca in the past. Don’t let the name mislead you – there’s no added gelatin in this product!
