How to Enjoy Our Maca

How to Enjoy Our Maca

Posted by The Maca Team on 31st Oct 2023

How should you take maca? As we’ve said in the past, there’s no right or wrong way. The “best” way to enjoy maca depends entirely on you - on your palate, on your digestion, and on your ingenuity.

That said, we can offer a few suggestions, from the very simplest to the most traditional. Whether you’re consuming your maca on the run or taking your time to savor it, the possibilities are endless.

Maca at its Roots

The first thing we want you to keep in mind is that you don’t “take” maca any more than you would take any food like, say, celery. Because maca IS a food, albeit a superfood like Brussels sprouts or avocado. It isn’t a supplement, though you can find it on The Maca Team’s site as a powder or convenient capsule, like many nutritional supplements. Maca should be part of a balanced diet, and has in fact been part of human diets for centuries now, particularly in its native region of the Peruvian Andes.

So how was maca traditionally consumed? Our selection of Maca Recipes includes historical dishes like the porridge Mazamorra de Maca as well as a fermented drink recipe called Chicha de Maca. Chicha is a beverage that has been prepared in the Andes for thousands of years. It can be enjoyed fermented or immediately after preparing, and it’s delicious either way.

  • 1/2 cup purple corn flour
  • 1 cup Maca chips (or 1/2 cup Maca powder)
  • 1/4 cup Quinoa
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 Cinnamon sticks
  • 10 Cloves
  • 1.5 Gallons of Water

  1. In a large pot, boil the cornstarch, Maca, Quinoa, Cinnamon and Cloves over the course for about 2 hours.
  2. Allow the mixture cool, strain and place in a large container. Add sugar.
  3. Allow to ferment for 2-6 days.
  4. Serve cold.

Refreshing Maca Smoothies

Smoothies have become a go-to way to get your greens and other vitamins and proteins in, making it relatively quick and convenient to pack a lot of nutrition into one dish (or tumbler).

We love smoothies, and adding maca to your smoothie is a delicious and nutritious way to enjoy it in the mornings or before or after a workout. This recipe for a hearty, filling green smoothie is one of our favorites.

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1 cup kale or other greens
  • 1-2 ripe kiwis
  • 2-3 T honey or agave syrup
  • 1 T coconut oil
  • 1 T ground flax seeds
  • 1/2 t vanilla extract
  • 1-3 T maca powder - raw or gelatinized maca is fine
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond or rice milk

Place all ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Feel free to adjust ingredients according to availability and your taste. Remember to use organically grown foods whenever possible.

Stir It In

Adding our organic maca root to your diet doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, depending on your ideal serving size, which should be based on your body weight and your goals, it can be as simple as stirring a couple teaspoons of our Peruvian maca powder into a glass of water.

While some consider maca root an acquired taste, others actually enjoy the flavor of maca. Adding raw or gelatinized maca powder into a morning beverage makes getting your daily “dose” of maca simple and straightforward.
