It’s always a good idea to do your research before adding a new supplement to your diet. While maca is a food - a superfood, to be precise - rather than a supplement, it never hurts to get an idea of what to expect from its introduction to your routine. This is especially true if you have a somewhat sensitive digestive system. All those pills and powders can result in a serious tummy ache, especially in combination with other dietary restrictions or medications you might consume on a regular basis. But that doesn’t mean you have to rule maca out!
What is Gelatinized Maca?
When you hear the word “gelatinized,” no doubt the first thing that comes to mind is something…well…gelatinous. And that probably doesn’t sound very appetizing. But the good news is, there’s nothing slimy or gross about our gelatinized maca products.
Gelatinized maca is, to put it simply, maca that has been pre-cooked in order to break down the starch content. It’s a simple process that doesn’t involve the addition of any other ingredients. There’s no gelatin involved in the process at all, and therefore whatever gelatinized maca product you purchase will be entirely vegan maca. The organic maca root is sustainably harvested from our fields in the Junin area of Peru before being sundried. Once they’re ready to be processed, the whole maca roots are heated to temperatures of about 160F, which causes the starch molecules to irreversibly dissolve. This is important, because it’s that starch content that’s sometimes responsible for the stomach upset experienced by people who take maca. The cooked maca is then ground into powder or cut up into small pieces before it makes its way to us, and then on to you.
Is Gelatinized Maca Better Than Raw Maca?
That depends on who you ask. The cooking process does result in some of the maca root’s nutrients being compromised, namely certain enzymes and Vitamin C. However, the majority of the maca’s other nutrients, including its key macaenes and macamides, will stay intact.
The main difference is simply that gelatinized maca is easier to digest.
How Do I Take Gelatinized Maca?
Like many of our other maca products, our gelatinized maca is available in several formulations. If you’re looking to boost male fertility and libido, consider trying out our gelatinized black maca powder. It’s available in three sizes and our 1kg foil-lined, food-grade pouch contains 111 individual servings of about 3 teaspoons a day. Mix it in with a glass of water, or even a cup of coffee - there’s no right or wrong way to incorporate your maca into your diet.
While the export of whole maca root from Peru is banned, we’re able to import maca roots that have been cut into chips before being packaged. Our gelatinized yellow maca root chips are perfect for cooking into oatmeal or porridge in the morning.
What if you don’t like the taste of maca? We understand that it’s not for everyone! If that’s the case, you have the option of taking maca in capsule form. Our gelatinized red maca capsules are made up of 100% red maca powder in vegan capsules, with a suggested serving size of 2 to 8 capsules daily. Available in 200-count recyclable plastic amber jars, it’s worth noting that our gelatinized red maca is higher in phytonutrients than our other gelatinized maca products, which contributes towards its reported hormonal health benefits.
If you’re interested in trying out our premium maca, we offer gelatinized maca products in black, red, and tricolor maca as well. Just keep in mind that premium powdered maca products will have a slightly spicier flavor than standard sundried maca.
