Description

Gelatinized Yellow Maca Root Chips, Certified Organic, Fair Trade, Non-GMO, Vegan and Gluten Free

What Are Gelatinized Yellow Maca Root Chips?

Gelatinized yellow maca root chips are made from yellow maca roots (Lepidium meyenii) grown in the high Andes of Peru. The roots are washed, cut into small pieces, and gelatinized to remove most of their natural starch content. This preparation style produces a traditional whole maca root product that many people find easier to digest than raw maca.

Because whole maca roots cannot legally be exported from Peru, maca chips are the closest form to whole maca root that can be sold internationally. They offer a more traditional preparation style than maca powder and are often used in porridges, teas, and cooked recipes.

Overview Gelatinized Yellow Maca Root Chips from The Maca Team

Our gelatinized yellow whole maca root chips come from an organic farming cooperative in and around Junín, Peru. We work only with growers who manage their land locally and follow traditional agricultural practices focused on organic cultivation, careful processing, and responsible handling.

Yellow maca is the most common of the three major maca root colors, making up about 60% of the annual harvest in Peru. These chips are made from pure yellow maca roots and are pre-cooked to remove most starch content, creating a traditional yellow maca root chip product that is plant-based, vegan, and easy to prepare in a variety of recipes.

How Are Maca Chips Different From Maca Powder?Yellow maca root

Although yellow maca powder and yellow maca chips come from the same root, they are used differently in the kitchen and provide a different preparation experience.

  1. Preparation: maca powder mixes easily into drinks and recipes, while maca chips are usually simmered, steeped, soaked, or cooked before use.
  2. Form: chips are closer to the original root structure, while powder is finely milled for easier blending.
  3. Texture and use: maca chips work especially well in porridges, warm cereals, and traditional recipes where a heartier texture is preferred.

How to Use Yellow Maca Chips

Gelatinized yellow maca chips can be prepared in several traditional and practical ways:

  • Simmer 1/2 cup of maca chips for about 1 hour and add them to oatmeal or another warm breakfast cereal.
  • Simmer 1/2 cup of maca chips for about 1 hour and blend them into a smoothie.
  • Steep maca chips in hot water for about 10 minutes to make a tea, adding sweetener if desired.

These chips are especially well suited to more traditional preparations such as porridge or mazamorra.

Traditional Mazamorra Recipe Traditional Mazamorra de Maca recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (130g) yellow maca chips
  • 1 cup (130g) flour
  • 1/4 cup (32g) sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • Clove, cinnamon, and/or anis to taste
  • 4 cups water

Preparation

Simmer the maca chips in water along with spices until soft, about 1 hour, adding water if necessary. Add flour, sugar, and milk and simmer for an additional 15–20 minutes. Allow to cool and enjoy. Mazamorra may be kept in the refrigerator for 1–2 days.

Why Some Customers Choose Gelatinized Maca Chips

Gelatinized yellow maca chips are often chosen by customers who want a more traditional whole-root preparation style than powder. Because they are gelatinized, they are also a practical choice for people who prefer a maca product with most of the starch content removed.

Many customers enjoy chips because they can be used in warm, hearty preparations that feel different from smoothies or powdered drinks.

Storage and Shelf Life

Maca keeps well for up to 24 months when stored in a sealed container away from direct sunlight, heat, and excess humidity. See more storage and use tips.

Suggested Use

Maca is commonly used as a food. Because these are chips rather than powder, they are typically simmered, steeped, or cooked before use. Serving size will vary depending on the recipe and preparation style. For more general guidance on maca serving sizes, see our complete serving guidelines.

We also offer gelatinized yellow maca root capsules and gelatinized yellow maca root powder.

Maca root is classified as a food and is generally recognized as safe for consumption. It has been used traditionally for centuries as a natural food source in the Andes.

There are no known contraindications to taking maca root products. However, individuals who are taking medications for high blood pressure should consult their healthcare provider before use, as maca may have a mild blood pressure–lowering effect in some people.

Maca naturally contains iodine, which is important to note for those who are sensitive to iodine or have thyroid conditions requiring restricted iodine intake.

As with any food or supplement, individuals who are pregnant, nursing, or under medical supervision should consult a qualified healthcare professional before using maca.
