Did you know that there are three different colors of maca root? Historically harvested as a tri-color blend, science has only recently begun to recognize the unique benefits of each color: black, red, and yellow. Though there’s no such thing as the “wrong” maca, there are several reasons why you might choose one over the others. Let’s take a look at some of the factors that make black maca root special.

What is Black Maca?

Black Maca Root

Maca root, or Lepidium meyenii, is a root vegetable belonging to the same family as cauliflower and cabbage. Black maca is the rarest of the three maca root colors, making up just 15-20% of the annual harvest in Peru, where maca originates. Maca root is associated with numerous health benefits, but the most commonly known are its energizing properties and its reputation for combatting sexual dysfunction.

Clinical trials have provided some evidence supporting the accounts of maca’s many perks. Black maca features predominantly in many studies, and as such it’s easy to find publications reporting on its impact on subjects of various species. A 2011 report assessing the effects of regular consumption of black maca in relation to erectile dysfunction, sperm quality and motility, and improved memory and learning found that maca did, in fact, bring about positive results. These manifested as increased male sexual behavior, larger litters, and some impressive lesser-known reactions like reversal of osteoporosis, suggestion of neuroprotective effects, and even protection against UV radiation.

How can a little root have such a big impact on the human body? Maca root packs a punch in the form of its nutritional content. It’s full of amino acids - namely, all of them - in addition to a healthy dose of essential vitamins and minerals. It contains glucosinolates, secondary metabolites found in Brassicales like maca that act as a layer of protection for the heart and brain.

Then there are macaenes and macamides, which are almost entirely unique to maca. These bioactive marker compounds have anti-inflammatory qualities and are believed to help the body fight cancerous tumors as well.

As maca’s popularity rises, the research is ongoing. But health-conscious men and women have taken note of the many ways adding maca to their diets can benefit them, and they’re turning to The Maca Team for a quality, organic product…and for more information besides.
