Our gelatinized premium red maca powder is made from 100% red maca roots which are carefully and consciously grown, processed and handled. The roots comes from an organic farming cooperative in and around Junin, Peru. We work only with producers who own and manage their lands at a local grass roots level. The cooperative of farmers is committed both to organic farming and to producing only the highest quality maca products.

Premium Gelatinized Red Maca Root Powder

There are two important considerations to understand about what makes this product unique.

First, what makes this maca “premium” is the special way in which it is processed. Instead of being sundried, maca roots are fresh processed immediately after harvest. After coming out of the ground they are cleaned in a citrus solution, ground into a pulp and low temperature dried. This special processing leaves more glucosinolates in the final product. Glucosinolates are nutrients that have been associated with anti-cancer properties.

Second, this maca powder is gelatinized. Gelatinization is a process in which maca roots are heated to high temperatures (160F / 70C). The heat causes the starch molecules in maca to irreversibly dissolve and the result is a powder that has had some of its nutrients compromised but is easier to digest than raw maca. It’s important to note that nothing is added to maca during the gelatinization process.

  • Comes from a modern approach to processing maca developed in the past 25 years

  • Is fresh processed - maca roots are dried in dehydrators immediately after harvest
  • Has higher glucosinolate content - nutrients which may help prevent cancer
  • Is much stronger tasting - has a more noticeable maca flavor with more spiciness
  • Is limited in supply since it must be produced from fresh roots during annual harvest (June-August)

This product has a few advantages. First, since it’s gelatinized it is easier to digest than raw premium red maca powder. Second, since glucosinolate content is maximized through premium processing techniques, this product is a bit stronger in terms of anti-cancer properties. Finally, other nutrients are concentrated during processing and some people find that they take a bit less of our premium products as compared to our standard or sun-dried ones.

Disadvantages of Taking Premium Gelatinized Red Maca Powder

The main disadvantages to using this product over a standard gelatinized red maca powder are that nutrients such as vitamin C and enzymes are destroyed during the heating process and that this type of maca is much stronger tasting. While some people do enjoy the taste, others find that it is a bit too spicy or earthy for their liking. Note that we also offer this product in capsule form if you wish to avoid the taste.
