How a simple root—and a deep respect for the land people who grow it—became the heart of everything we do.
The Maca Team began with a question:
“Why is it so hard to find maca that’s truly pure, traditionally grown, and handled with real care?”
In the early 2000s, founder Mark Ament was working in natural health education when he experienced firsthand how maca could support energy, mood, and hormonal balance. But he also noticed something troubling: it was nearly impossible to find maca that was consistently high quality. Much of what was available was old, low-potency, blended with fillers, or harvested without respect for traditional farmers.
Even more concerning, the people who grew this extraordinary root were rarely acknowledged—let alone supported.
Drawing on his years of study and travel in Latin America, Mark set out to understand maca at its source. His research led him to the cold, windswept highlands of Junín, Peru, where maca originated thousands of years ago. What he discovered changed things.
A Partnership, Not a Supply Chain
Mark discovered families and small farming cooperatives in Junín who had cultivated maca for generations—farmers who plant by hand, rotate their fields using ancient practices, and harvest according to the rhythm of the land instead of the demands of industry.
What began as a search for the highest-quality maca grew into something deeper: relationships built on respect, reciprocity, and long-term commitment.
We realized early on that we didn’t just want exceptional maca. We also wanted to support the amazing work of the communities dedicated to preserving the tradition of this amazing superfood.
Those principles shaped everything that followed:
- Working directly with cooperative farms
- Paying stable, fair, relationship-based pricing
- Supporting organic and regenerative agriculture
- Honoring indigenous knowledge and stewardship
Our business has grown, but this approach has never changed.
From Home-Based Passion to a Trusted Global Source
The early days were humble—packing bags in a spare room, hand-labeling orders, answering every customer question personally, and introducing people to a root most had never heard of. But the quality spoke for itself. People felt the difference. They felt the integrity. And they told their friends.
As demand grew, the business became a family effort.
In 2011, Mark’s dad and stepmom stepped in to manage all shipping and fulfillment. What began at a desk in their home office eventually expanded into a small warehouse—then, in 2015, into a dedicated facility designed to support growing customer demand, still run with the same care and precision they brought from day one.
By 2013, Mark’s mom joined the team as well, taking the lead on customer service. Her warmth, patience, and genuine desire to help set the tone for the customer experience we still strive to deliver today. Many customers have spoken with her over the years—and still ask for her by name.
These contributions weren’t just logistical support.
They were the heartbeat of a true family business.
As the company grew, the core never changed: a small, committed family working together to share the best possible maca with the world.
Over time, The Maca Team became one of the most established and specialized maca companies in the world—still family-run, still focused exclusively on maca, and still working with the same farming partners who believed in us from the beginning.
Today, our maca reaches customers in more than 50 countries, supported by rigorous third-party COA testing, transparent sourcing, and a commitment to purity that has never wavered.
