Question: Anyone know how to take maca without getting heartburn?
I have started taking maca, and it seems I cannot take it without getting heartburn or a burning throat. I only take about one capsule or less and I still get acid problems. Anyone out there ever had these problems and found a solution? I’m a long-time user of maca and I have had similar issues with certain types of maca.
Our Answer
As long-time users of maca ourselves, and as sellers of maca for many years, we’ve seen that it is uncommon for people to report heartburn from maca. But it can happen. Some people are more sensitive to certain forms of maca, larger servings, or taking maca on an empty stomach.
Here are our top tips for using maca more comfortably if you are prone to heartburn, burning throat, or sensitive digestion.
- For some people, raw maca powder can feel strong or harder to digest. If you also get an upset stomach, you may want to try gelatinized maca. It has had much of the starch reduced through a water-based heating process, which makes it easier for many people to use.
- Make sure you are using high-quality, certified organic, fresh maca. Quality and freshness can make a real difference in taste, digestion, and overall experience.
- Try red maca, since it has a smoother, slightly sweeter flavor and is often considered one of the most palatable maca colors. Some people who have trouble with other maca powders do better with red maca.
- Try taking maca with yogurt, avocado, milk, or another food that contains some fat. For some people, taking maca with food is much more comfortable than taking it alone.
- Keep your serving small. If you are sensitive, start with less than 1/2 teaspoon of powder or a smaller capsule serving and increase only if it feels comfortable.
- Avoid combining maca with foods or drinks that already trigger heartburn for you. Some people find that acidic fruit, citrus, or certain smoothie combinations are not the best match.
- If digestive discomfort continues, stop using maca and check with a qualified health care professional, especially if you have ongoing reflux, burning throat, difficulty swallowing, or other persistent symptoms.
Simple starting point for sensitive digestion:
- Use a very small serving
- Take maca with food
- Consider gelatinized maca instead of raw maca
- Avoid late-day use if maca feels stimulating
- Stop if discomfort continues
Check out some of our maca recipes for inspiration. Recipes can be helpful because maca is often easier to enjoy when it is blended into familiar foods and drinks.
Remember that maca is part of the mustard family and naturally has a somewhat earthy, malty, and slightly spicy flavor. If you are using a good-quality product, keeping the serving small, and taking it with food, you may find it easier to enjoy maca without digestive discomfort.
